The Master, Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

Influenced by Scientology, The Master is Paul Thomas Anderson’s first film since 2007’s There Will Be Blood (my personal favorite). The movie stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as an L. Ron Hubbard-ish figure “who returns after witnessing the horrors of WWII and tries to rediscover who he is in post-war America. He creates a belief system, something that catches on with other lost souls,” with help from his right-hand man Freddie, played by Joaquin Phoenix. The cast also includes Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons, and Laura Dern. In theaters October 12.
